What is a discipleship pathway?
A disciple is someone who follows the teachings of another. At Dayton, our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our discipleship pathway is a list of some essential tools that we believe will help individuals become dedicated followers of Jesus.
Who should journey down the discipleship pathway?
Everyone! Being a follower of Jesus is a process. We all need to take steps to help us grow deeper in our faith. If we are not growing, then we become stagnate. We believe God wants everyone to continue growing in their faith journey. This means no matter how long or short a time you have been a Christian, you should take steps on the discipleship pathway to keep getting closer to Jesus on your faith journey.
What are the steps of our discipleship pathway?
Connecting to Christ Class
This is a class that is designed to help you develop the basic tools that you need to exercise on a daily and/or regular basis to grow deeper in your faith journey by connecting with Christ.
In this class you will learn:
How to study the Bible and why we should
How to pray
How to fast
How to journal
A Biblical understanding of baptism and communion
Small groups are essential in growing closer to Christ. In a small group you should:
Learn how God helped others through difficult life situations.
Discover how others experienced God in their faith journey.
Experience support and love of other Christians.
Allow others to keep you accountable to your journey.
The Great Banquet is a 72-hour retreat that helps us to get away from all of the distractions of life and discover just how much God loves us. Whether it is this, or another experience like it, everyone needs to go one a retreat where they can clearly experience God moving in their heart and life.
Spiritual Growth Opportunities
In addition to our personal devotional life, it is important to allow God to speak to us through special opportunities that are offered in the life of our church. Some examples of this are:
Family Night Live! – a variety of classes offered in the Spring and Fall.
Global Impact Celebration (GIC) – This is a weekend where we celebrate what God has done through our missionaries and we renew our commitment to support them.
Guest Speakers – on occasion we have guest who give us insight on a subject
Testimony Services – These are services where people share how God became real in their life and how they experienced His love and guidance.
Serve at Church
It is not enough to just learn about God. We also are called to put what we learn about the love of God into action. Every follower of Jesus should serve in some capacity at the church they attend. This service should be in accordance with the gifts, passion, abilities, personality, and experience of each individual. There is a tool at the church called a spiritual gift inventory that can help guide you toward a good fit for your ministry. Contact Pastor Eric for details.
Serve the Community
In addition to serving at church, disciples of Jesus should serve in the local community, so that others can see the love of Jesus through our service. Some examples of serving in the community are:
Food Finders Food Truck Ministry
Kids Hope USA
Habitat for Humanity
Serve the World
One of the most powerful tools that God uses to help us to grow on our faith journey is serving on a mission trip. Whether it is going with the Ghana team to plant new churches in the jungle or going on a trip in the States, God uses a mission trip to teach us humility, generosity, and dependence upon Him.
How do I get on the discipleship pathway?
It doesn’t really matter where you begin your journey or how long you have been a Christian. The important thing is that you start walking. Choose a step today and begin your journey. Need help to get started? Contact Pastor Eric at the church. He will be happy to help you start your journey.
