Destination Dig

This week, from Monday through Thursday, we will hold Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Dayton UMC. From 6:00 to 8:30 each evening the church building will be filled with children singing, worshiping, giving offerings to missions, studying God's Word, playing games, crafting and snacking. It is one of the highlight weeks of the summer!

This year's VBS theme, Destination Dig, plays off of archeology and digging into God's word to unearth the truth about Jesus. The theme Scripture is Jeremiah 29:13: You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

There is something deeply joyful about teaching children about Jesus. All week we will first of all show the love of Jesus to the children by interacting with them in loving patience. Something like 40 volunteer servants show each child that Jesus loves them by our loving them.

We will lead the children into worship. Our opening and closing sessions are always filled with joyful songs and meaningful prayer. (I am one of those uncoordinated adults who finds it difficult to do the motions and sing at the same time!)

We will teach the children principles from God's Word. They will see that God promised to send His Son to us, and then He did it! They will see that we all mess up and try to live without God. They will see that Jesus came to pay the price for our sins. They will see that we respond to Jesus' gift by giving our lives to Him.

We will also have fun! VBS is filled with laughter and joy. Here is what the Apostle Peter says about knowing Jesus: Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy! (1 Peter 1:8 NIV) Life in Jesus is not religious duty. It is freedom and it is life. And it results in "inexpressible and glorious joy!"

I am thankful that I found a real relationship with God through Jesus Christ when I sought Him with all my heart. I am thankful that the seeking and the finding did not end when I asked Jesus into my life at age 15. I am thankful that God reveals more and more of Himself to me as I dig into His Word and walk with Jesus through life. I am thankful that I could Seek Truth and Find Jesus!

I am praying for an awesome week at VBS. I know we will all be exhausted when the week ends. But the exhaustion will be tempered with inexpressible and glorious joy!
