The vision of Dayton United Methodist Church is Know Christ, Grow Faith, Go Witness. We believe disciples of Jesus Christ are made by paying attention to all three things.
Each year our congregation sends people to Go Witness through short-term mission trips. A team just returned from Ghana, West Africa, and will lead worship today, giving testimony to what God did on their trip. This worship experience is always filled with awe and joy at what God is doing through our partnership with Joseph and Stella Otsin (church planters with the Methodist Church of Ghana) and with Cameron and Anne Gongwer (medical missionaries with TMS Global).
The team works each year in two villages, identified by the Methodist Church of Ghana as places to plant a new church. Joseph Otsin oversees the work, preparing the way by making contacts in the villages and identifying and training two Caretaker Pastors to lead the churches when they are planted. At the end of the ten days the DUMC team spends in Ghana each village will have a new church with a new pastor, a pavilion which serves as the framework for a church building in that village, and the witness of the love of Christ expressed through a medical clinic, children's ministry and evangelistic services.
In addition to this multi-faceted ministry and church planting, our congregation raised the money to provide five water wells in villages in the area. The water wells provide clean, safe drinking water, which dramatically improves health in the area and saves lives. While in Ghana, the team participates in the dedication of these water wells with a ceremony that includes proclamation of the Living Water found in Jesus.
The witness of our congregation for Jesus Christ reaches across the street and to the ends of the earth. People experience the love of God in acts of grace like providing water wells and medical clinics. People hear the Good News of Jesus Christ through children's ministry, door to door witnessing and evangelistic services. People receive Christ. People receive prayer for healing. A church is planted that will have effect in these two villages far into the future.
And in going to make this witness, the participants in the mission trip also find transformation. Discipleship is deepened. Faith grows. Life becomes more and more about others. And our vision becomes reality. People Know Christ. People Grow Faith. People Go Witness. And our entire congregation is impacted - and celebrates what God did in Ghana!
