Holy Love

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love"

-- Jesus (John 15:9 NIV)

The heart of God is a heart of holy love. And the heart of faith in Jesus is the same heart.

Holy love is holy. Holy love is not interested in that which rebels against the God who created us and loved us first. Holy love is not a license to do whatever we want, because after all, Jesus will forgive us.

The good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ begins with love. In love, God created us in His image. When Adam and Eve chose to disobey the God who loved them, sin came into the world, leading to death. But God still loved these fallen creatures He had made. So He kept revealing Himself to humanity and inviting us to return to Him. Finally, "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16 NIV)

God so loved the world. God so loved us fallen, sinful creatures. God so loved you. And me. The heart of God is a heart of holy love. And holy love compelled God to act. He sent His Son to be born supernaturally of a virgin in Galilee named Mary. This God-in-the-flesh Rabbi taught the heart of God and did the works of God, healing many, walking on water, calming storms with a simple command, and even raising the dead.

Then Jesus went to a cross and laid down His life for the sins of the world. For you. And for me. The sacrifice of love paid the price required by the holiness of His nature. And sin and death were conquered for all who put faith in Jesus Christ!

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love"

The life we live by faith in Jesus is a life of His holy love. Jesus loves us with the same self-sacrificing love with which the Father loved Him. And so He tells us to remain in His love. Live in His love. Be saturated by His love. Allow His love to motivate everything we say and do. Take up our own cross, die to ourselves and live out holy love. This is the heart of Jesus and it is the heart of our holiness.

The One who said "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy" in Leviticus 19:2 (and elsewhere) calls us to holiness. The problem is we are not holy and we cannot be holy in and of ourselves. We need to be sanctified. We need to be made holy by the holy love of Jesus Christ soaking every thought, word and deed. His holy love, poured into our lives, cannot leave us unchanged. As we embrace and soak up and live out the love of Jesus, we become like Him. Our lives become expressions of holy love. And that leads to holy living.

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love"

Love God with all your heart. Love others as you love yourself. Receive the holy love of Jesus Christ. Live out the holy love of Jesus Christ. This is the calling and reality of every one of His children. Remain in His love. Nothing else matters for eternity.
