Light of the World
I have long been "of the age" when I make a nightly trip to the rest room. The old bladder just can't make it through seven or eight hours of sleep. I have three objectives: 1--finding relief, 2--not waking Shirley up, and 3--not waking up so much that I have trouble getting back to sleep.
So I stumble to the bathroom in the dark. You know what happens occasionally, don't you? I stub my toe on something in the dark. Man, that hurts!
Light shows the dangers in the path in the darkness. Walking outside at night without illumination can be treacherous. Light shows the holes in the yard and the stumps I might trip on.
The light of a lighthouse serves as a reference point for ships in the fog or the dark of the night. A lighthouse also serves as a warning that shallow water and land are nearby, so steer clear...
Without the light of the sun, there could be no human life on earth. The planet would be sub-zero in temperature, and there could be no photosynthesis in plants, and so no atmosphere or food for humans or animals.
Light is vital to existence. And Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)
Jesus, who was God in flesh-and-blood, is the Light of life. When the Light of His presence shines into our lives, we see the darkness of our own hearts. We see the deep holes of sin and the stumps of bad decisions that would trip us up. He lights the way to the Father.
Jesus is the Light of life. His light is the spiritual photosynthesis that produces the fruit of the Spirit in our lives that changes our character from sinful selfishness to Christlike selflessness. We are delivered from death to life by Him.
Jesus is the Light of life. He warms our hearts with the fire of His love as surely as the sun warms us on a warm June day. Cold heartedness is changed to warm hearted caring in those who receive Jesus into our lives and follow Him in our living.
Jesus is the Light of the world. The Son is the sun, and we are the moon, reflecting His light into the darkness of the world to light the way to the Father. That's why Jesus said another thing about the Light of the world.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV)
He was speaking to His disciples. And He was speaking to us. To follow Jesus is to let our light shine before others, so they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven.
Note Jesus did not say, "...so they may see your good deeds and give you a pat on the back." The focus is not on us. The focus is on making the Father known through our relationship with the Son. When we love, give, serve and sacrifice, we point to Jesus, who is the Way to the Father.
He is the sun. We are the moon. We reflect His kindness, goodness and love. And those walking in darkness are able to see the great Light. As the Mandalorian says, "This is the way."
