A mustard seed is a tiny, tiny seed. But the bush that grows from it is large enough to resemble a tree! A tiny thing can have a huge impact.
A small measure of yeast works through an entire batch of dough to raise the bread to be light and fluffy. A tiny thing can have a huge impact.
Jesus used these two analogies in a pair of parables in Matthew 13: 31-34. He says there that the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed and like yeast. I believe Jesus is calling us to pay attention to the small things in our lives, because small things grow to be huge things.
Frank Outlaw, President of Bi-Lo Stores, is quoted as saying this:
Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become character.
Watch your character, for they become your destiny.
Many times small changes reap big transformation in our lives. Getting up 15 minutes earlier and spending a few minutes each morning reading Scripture and talking to God can change the trajectory of the entire day.
Dave Ramsey's famous "debt snowball" (Paying off our smallest debt while making minimum payments on our other debts, then adding what was being paid on the smallest debt to the next smallest until it is paid off, then adding what was being paid on that debt to the next smallest...) simply works. In a much shorter time than we think might be possible, we can become debt free!
Being intentional to do at least one act of kindness per day for people around us can quickly morph into a heart that practices kindness as the default position and change the entire orientation of our lives.
How can we find the strength to begin to make small changes that become big time transformation in our lives? Jesus says it is the Kingdom of God that accomplishes it. What is the Kingdom of God? It is making Jesus the Lord of our lives. It is pursuing Him with passion and single-minded focus. It is saying "yes" to the inner promptings of His Holy Spirit, even when it seems daunting or weird or costly.
You see, if Jesus is the King--the Lord of my life--there is never a right time to say "no" to Him. When we say "yes" to Jesus in love and trust, miraculous, transformative things happen in our lives. The Kingdom of God breaks in, and nothing can ever be the same.
I am convinced God is glorified in our lives and has maximum power to transform us when we start with the next step, even if it seems to be a tiny step, and walk in His way. Because a tiny thing can have a huge impact, when the King of the universe is involved.
