Singing Over Us

There is perhaps no more peaceful and joyful thing than a mother or father rocking their precious baby and singing over them. Amazing tenderness and love are expressed in the simple act of snuggling and rocking and singing. A parent's heart bursts with joy in that simple moment of holding the child one loves so much.

God loves us like that.

Zephaniah 3:17 says, "The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

The Might Warrior takes great delight in you. He rejoices over you with singing. The Living God bursts with joy to claim you as His precious child, not because you have done anything to earn His delight, but because you are in Christ. John 1:12 says, "Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God."

God loves us like that.

When conviction grips our hearts over the things we have thought, said and done that break God's heart, we can approach Him like the wayward son in Jesus' story. The son demanded his inheritance before his father died, then went away and squandered all the money in "riotous living." (That's Bible talk for "partied hearty!") Jesus says when the son came to his senses he realized two things: he did not deserve to be a son to his father any more, and his father's servants had it better than he was currently living. So he went home to his father and offered himself as a hired hand. He didn't deserve any better.

But his father saw things differently. His father had never stopped loving him. His father was ready to not only forgive him. His father restored him to his place as a beloved son. We may think of God as the keeper of holy standards which we have violated, which means we do not deserve His favor or blessing or love. But God, the Mighty Warrior, rejoices over us with singing.

God loves us like that.

And when God sees our flawed, imperfect lives and looks into our hearts beneath the flaws, He notices our love for Jesus. He notices our desire to be like Him. He sees our attempts to love others with the love we have received. And He rejoices over us with singing. He is pleased with us. God loves us with an everlasting love.

Do we deserve it? Nope. Can we earn it? Nope. But we can receive it. We can trust the One who loves us like that. We can believe we are not worthless worms in God's sight, but rather precious children. And we can spend the rest of our lives loving Him back and allowing His great love to flow through us to others. When we love Him with our whole hearts and love others with His great love, we please Him. With all our flaws and failures, we please Him.

God loves us like that.

If you are prone to deny it or resist it or believe it's too good to be true, then look to Jesus. His love and forgiveness are a gift of grace. We don't deserve it and we cannot earn it. We can only receive it and pay it forward in gratitude.

Because God loves us like that!
