Spiritual Blindness

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord

Open the eyes of my heart

I want to see you

I want to see you

(Songwriter Paul Baloche)

One of the most striking things that Jesus did when He walked our planet in flesh and blood was to heal the eyes of the blind.

And they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” ... And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed Him on the way. (Mark 10:46-52 NIV)

Blindness becomes sight. Bartimaeus sees faces and sky and trees and clouds. And the face of Jesus. The one walking in darkness could see the Light of day. What a miracle!

But here's the thing: we can have perfectly good eyes and be spiritually blind.

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:3-4 NIV)

We can see with our eyes and be blinded to what is real. We can see physical things and be blind to spiritual things. Jesus can be working in our lives and we don't see Him. The Apostle Paul says the god of this age blinds the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel. Satan wants to keep us in darkness and death. But Jesus came as the Light of the world to open our eyes!

And here's another thing: spiritual blindness does not end when we come to know Jesus. We can be blind to Him and run from Him for a lifetime. Or we can, by His grace, open our spiritual eyes and both see and receive Him into our lives by faith. We can walk with Jesus for years and still have blind spots in our lives. Areas where we are still blind to the Truth.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. I want to see you.

What penetrates the darkness of spiritual blindness? Jesus does. His Holy Spirit does. The unconditional love of the God of grace does. Spiritual blindness is a part of spiritual warfare. And the New Testament is clear that spiritual war requires spiritual weapons.

So prayer comes front and center in battling spiritual blindness. Prayer for God to open our own blind eyes, and prayer for the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of those we love who remain spiritually blind. Talk to God about them, before you talk to them about God!

Ask God to remove the veil that is blinding their eyes to the truth. Love them with the love of Jesus, even if there is resistance. Speak truth to them - but only in love, and only when prompted by the Holy Spirit. Only He knows their heart and knows when and what they need to hear. Make a friend. Be a friend. Bring your friend to Jesus.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. I want to see you.
