Your King is Coming

For centuries, Israel had a King, while looking for the King to come. The King was the one promised by the prophets who would fulfill the promise God made to David, that his throne would be established forever. Isaiah foretold it:

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. (Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV)

I promised to marry Shirley (proposed and gave her an engagement ring, which she accepted) at Christmas of our senior year in high school. We were married a year and a half later. That year and a half seemed like an eternity. Waiting for the promise of something life-changing makes time slow down and fills the heart with expectation and desire for that promise to be fulfilled.

Israel's longing and expectation was fulfilled when Jesus was born, but most of Israel had no idea because Jesus did not fit the profile of the Messiah they were expecting. They were expecting a glorious King. Jesus temporarily left behind that glory to be born in flesh-and-blood in the most humble of circumstances.

That Jesus was Israel's Messiah was proven in His resurrection. He really is the Son of God and the King of kings! That Jesus is the world's Messiah will be fully fulfilled when He returns in glory to establish His Kingdom of peace and righteousness for eternity. Then He will right every wrong. Then He will remake the world to be a place without sickness, death or war. That glorious day is still coming, and we are longing for it and expecting it just as Israel longed for His first coming.

The King is coming! We can get a foretaste of the joy of His coming in the anticipation that is experienced when the Queen of England is scheduled to make an appearance. People prepare everything for the Queen's visit. People wait in line to get a chance to meet her. People rejoice to see their Queen in person.

The King is coming! We live by that faith and prepare everything for His coming. We who follow Jesus know the Kingdom has already come in the hearts of those who serve Him as their King, and yet the fulfillment of His kingship will only come on the great and glorious day of His return! That hope is still captured in an old gospel song by Bill and Gloria Gaither:

The King is coming The King is coming I just heard the trumpets sounding And now His face I see O the King is coming The King is coming Praise God, He's coming for me

Not just any King is coming. The King of kings is coming. Your King is coming. My King is coming! Praise God, He's coming for me!
